Check RAM, PCI-Cards (if there are any) and CPU (for overheating).
Can't say anymore right now.. good luck solving it.

hi guys,

Ive just helped a friend install a brand new motherboard, all the cables seem to be in the right place and it has a new 450wat psu

after about 10 seconds of switching the power on it turns iteslf off, this happens both on the bios screen as well as windows loading

any ideas which component is causing it

thanks in advance

Check if all the power cords are in place, and that the system hasn't been heating alot, This has happened to me once and fixed it by opening the pc and putting in the power cord right.

make sure there are no exposed power cables touching metal, that could very easily short out your friend's setup.

This sounds like the Heatsink on the CPU is not seated correctly and therfore is letting the CPU get too hot

cheers for the advice, we have now the problem sorted

The problem seemed to be with the heatsink, what i think happened is that when we took it from the original motherboard we did not add any more thermal paste because it seemed to already have a layer on it. Maybe this old paste had gone hard and therefore acted as a barrier between the heatsink and cpu. After we scraped the old paste off and added new, bingo no problems! works like a dream.

either that or the heat sink wasnt seated properly.

anyway there you go, you gave the right advice, cheers
