ok here are my specs
ati 9700 pro with only the fan that came with it
amd althon xp 1.9 processor
20 gb seagate hd
512 ram

ok i tryed overclocking my card last year , and for a day or 2 it ran great all of a sudden my pc freeze and just turn off, i tryed turning it on again and nothing just a blank screen, when i got it repaired i found out the processor had been fryed, i dont want this to happen again , so was wondering wot a safe rate would be for a ati 9700 pro card for overclocking taking in note, i dont have any special cooling fans just one on my mobo and the one with my card. i need to overclock really because my pc is running crap. thx for reading

well the 9700 pro is clocked higher than the 9700 standerd
giving you less head room.

a rule of thumb is to overclock 1 to 10% of the existing clock speeds
if you dont wont to cook it stick with 5% or below, you wont get the that big of a boost but its better than nothing.

you could always buy a new card...

what are you using to OC anyway?

RivaTuner is a good overclocking tool

The best bet is to always go up in 5- 10Mhz increments, so

Your Memory Clock to 330Mhz

And your Core Clock to 315Mhz

and so on

You will be best off using Ati Tool for this, http://www.techpowerup.com/atitool/

Don't go too far though as your Rig will lock up

if those are your factory default speeds and for example lets SAY your OCing 10%

vpu/cpu spd: 341 mhx
memory spd: 356 mhz

hwo you do the math is you divide 310 (vpu/gpu spd) into .10 (which is decimal 10%) which = 31
now you add that to your clock speed and there your max OC.

I dont suggest using 10% "just becuase" for OCing its just a rule of thumb.

the way your suposed to OC is slowly increasing the clock speeds 1% at a time the testing for stability (run 3dmark03)
if you get distortion on your screen or in game back it off untilll it runs with out a problem and thats your max OC.

there so much more to know so google it

and like Dogz said RivaTuner is good ....
it can scan, stablize and set your OC speeds for you!

As a general rule, the more cooling the better chance of overclocking safely

If you are serious about O/C ing your card then maybe get a cooler that attaches to the card

Something like this will help http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_2842.html
