I have just cleared out a load of crap from my hardrive, when i rebooted, the DVD-Ram drive was missing :nxs:

When i went to device manager it told me this.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drive but nothing.

I didn't need device drivers for it when i originally installed it, XP just detects it and uses one of it own drivers

I have searched the net for drivers that may be compatible, but nothing works

I can't put the XP disc in to repair the damage, as the cd won't run in a non detected drive

I can't even save all my work off and do a master reboot, coz i can't burn anything

The drive is an LG (HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA4120B).

I'm screwed without this, so any help would be well appeciated

no ghost disc? Why would you erase the driver anyway?

It was a sneaky shared file

It came up as part of a DVD producer uninstall

Yeah, only a firmware update, but it needs to detect the drive before it can update it

This is a bloody nightmare, i tried to put another cd rom drive in and that does the same thing, whether it's in on it's own or slaved to the other drive

*got my account working again ..sigh .. *

Hmm ... you know when you do something and the next minute you regret it ?

I had a similar problem, deleting shared files while uninstalling 3rd/1st party software is not recommended. Regarding some precious system files, intentionally deleted a registry key which I mistaken with a Virus...Resulted in a failure while rebooting the next time, had to format and install windows again, lost all of my data. That sucks, I hope you didn't delete some share file for the CD/DVD drive, these stuff only come once in a life. (Or an installation ...in this case, reinstalling windows would solve the problem)

Reinstalling windows will solve the problem, you don't need to format, just run the install it will recover the share file and your DVD/CD will work again...at the cost of windows customizations (themes), but it can also be easily recovered

*However, i guess if you remember the name of the shared file, "simply" copy the same file from another system running the same operation system. (Not tested :dennis: )

I always say, when in doubt, leave it.
I learned it the hard way

*EDIT*: If you have more than one hard drive, recovering data is not a problem, zip all you need to the 2nd HD, format the first and install windows again, reconnect the 2nd drive and retrieve your data (make sure the 2nd drive got NO virtual memory listed onto it, disable it, use the 1st drive)

try to clean the registry and then install from the CD.
If that doesn't help and WinXP detected it the first time by its own then that means reinstalling Win XP i guess
