I decided I might as well figure out why the hell people think why they think on 2 big issues: the draft and gay marrige.
Both are really US issues but I would love comments from people from around the world(thats 1 thing I think is so great about these forums, the diversity)

The Draft, which is a very conservative issue, I don't mind and partially support.

Gay Marrige, a very liberal issue, I also don't mind and support.

Why are people so against manditory militiary service?
I think its a good idea, well at least I don't see anything wrong with it. All my relatives, cousins, and everyone in my family has had to go through with it and they don't mind, and I think if manditory military service was imposed on the US, I wouldn't love it, but honostly, I wouldn't be against it. Why are people so against holding a public job and giving 1-2 years of your life to your country.

Why are people so against gay marrige. We have gone over this, the US was based on not having any religous influence over goverment. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" - Bill of Rights. If gays want to marry, they should have that right, there is no reason to infringe it.. there is no basis for it, it doesn't affect me. Let them marry if they want to.

JUst like to add again: Im open to sides, opinions, agreement, statements.. whatever.. I want to hear what the arguements are for these issues.

neither do I. But remember.. Religon shouldn't be a reason... Its illegal(unconstitutional) in the US to use religon as a base for policy.

Gay Marriage good.
Draft not so good.

The only people I've ever talked to who opposed gay marriage have based their ideas on religious values, which is completely off-base as there is a strict seperation of church and state, one of the things that makes our country so great. I see know reason why two people who want to be together can't be married just because their is an even number of penises in the group.

As for the draft, it will never happen, Bush can't rally THAT much support.

^what he said. Draft would suck. If I got chosen that would suck. Getting blown up on a routine traffic check is not my idea of fair.

The discussion of the draft is baffling. There has been absolutely no indication from the White House that they are in the least bit interested in a draft.

It was a Democrat that introduced the draft bill for vote, with the idea that the House could crush the bill and finally put to rest the consistent rumors of a draft. It's not going to happen.

Furthermore, the military is vehemently opposed to a draft. They do not have the capability to train a huge influx of conscripts, and it would dilute the effectiveness of our military, not enhance it. Our military is far too technical today to train a bunch of unwilling recruits in a short time to any level of effectiveness.
