Great stuff. Id recommend trying out Fedora.. then ASAP moving to slackware(just learn to format with fdisk and its easy)
I use linux myself about 3/4 of the time. My dekstop screen is on that one post a screen of your desktop thread, last one on page 10. In Desktop and WM and GUI interface.. linux is FAR ahead of windows... |

I use Linux quite a lot for programming n stuff. I wont say its good or bad .
It has its prblems . As far as Installation is concerned its really easy .GUI asks U for every little info. And i would recomend Mandrake(very good interface) or debian (very stable). Every distro has its goodies, U just have to decide what is more important .BTW i use debian.

Stable? I prefer slack. Its just as stable but it doesn't take stuff 5-8 years to come into stable. and debians testing is horrible! (for example.. debain stable(3.0r2, released less then a month ago.. VERY NEW) uses the 2.2 Kernal tree, which has unbearable performance compared to 2.4 and especially 2.6(or 2.6 with either ck, mm, ak, or gentoo patchs), was released in 25-Jan-1999. Thats right. the 2-3 week old Debian is based on software that is 6 years old(its closer to jan 2005 then jan 2004) Teh rest of the distro follows at stuff like Mozilla 1.0(horrible by todays standards) I stick with fedora Slack and Gentoo. Depending on the time/what I need. Mandrake is crap. It hasn't been good since version 6. (which is now outdated) Redhat and Fedora have long surprassed it in quality, stablity, usablity, looks, and features. Slackware is quick and feature filled.. and it has no dependancy hell. Its package managment is the best out there. Gentoo takes time and some knowlage to set up. But its package management is easy to use and get stuff(just type emerge program. ie emerge kde. emerge gnome, emerge x11-xorg.. etc. It downloads, fixs the dependancies, and installs whatever you tell it to. all by itself)(although, just like debian's package managment, it is fundamentally flawed). And there is no distro that runs faster. (Gentoo, Arch, Slack, Debain, in order from fastest to slowest(all are quite fast though) in my expirance) |

Linux is way further ahead then windows in desktops and enviroments. hell x.org 6.8 has sweet ass features in composite and its fontrenders. and the things KDE and gnome and Enlightenment are doing.. amazing.. quick.. and just sweet. www.kde-look.org www.gnome-look.org www.enlightenment.org www.fluxbox.org |
