All they are doing is looking for scapegoats, first heavy metal was the cause of all violence, now games are.
The reason why they create these 'scapegoats' is because they wont admit that the problem is not caused by games or wathever.. If they would admit it is a Psycic kind of problem then they would have to spend more money on healthcare for the average joe instead of some fine new nuclear weapons. Creating a scapegoat puts the problem in somebody else's hands (the music industry and now the gameindustry) and still makes the goverment look good, after all, because they are banning sexual/violent games they are saving your kids from going on a killing-spree in the local Wall-Mart, or something else nasty. This patern will end when goverments stop being greedy for money/power. Somehow I dont see that happening....

Sorta close there LB, but you missed the mark a little.
The real reason for the constant scapegoat thing is because politicians, by attacking something as controversial as an entertainment industry, gain coverage in the press. That is their sole motivation. More "Face time" in the press equals more free publicity which increases the chance of re-election. It's not an accident that these issues always surface as elections approach. So, you want to get rid of this crap and deal with the real issues? Put in term limits. No politician can EVER be re-elected and all of this BS will go away overnight.

Hurricane Hillary has swept through the east cost and took every major video game store with it. All that is left are some small retail gamestores that carries only games like DooM3, GTA, Postal 2 and such...the irony that followed came hard but at least mercyless

I work as a researcher at a university and we have done some research on the impact of violent movies on aggressive behaviour. And it does have an impact. After watching such movies, children become moody, cranky and even aggressive. It is not only imitating what they saw in the movie, like copying a cool karate move, but even their physical characteristics change: their adrenaline and blood pressure is higher. So yes, children do become more aggressive. But not all children. There is a statistical relation but it's not a perfect one: not everyone becomes more aggressive after watching such movies. So if somebody says that it doesn't affect him or his children, that is very well possible. But don't ignore that there are other people who are affected.

To a point...
But if you carry out that line of thinking (and Monkey's) to the extreme, then there isn't anything wrong with hardcore porn on prime time TV. I mean, if you don't want to see it, just change the channel right? In the US, the airwaves belong to the public. The FCC exists to enforce the public will on the airwaves they own. If the majority of those owners don't want a certain type of programming, then it is up to the FCC to enforce that will. Of course, the trick is figuring out just what the public will is. Note that the FCC has no jurisdiction over things such as CDs, and those organizations that enforce ratings on those things are largely voluntary (and market driven). As I said before, US politicians spouting off about the evils of this or that are nothing more than the political animal seeking publicity in the face of an election campaign, and has nothing to do with reality. If a politician decides that they will gain votes and publicity by introducing legislation to outlaw petting a dog in public, then you can bet they will carry on about it as if the earth's very existence depends on the outcome.
