Default Educational sites

I cannot stop ranting about these utter bullshit sites that we have to use for school.
First of all, they don't have their DNS's right, WHY CAN'T I ACCESS A SITE WITHOUT USING WWW. BEFORE IT? That's because the standard administrator of such a site, hell even a network of sites all providing lessons and courses for the average student, can't even properly set up their domain names, I mean how hard is it to make a new record that redirects to the www. version? Also the same with subdomains, why the hell should i put www. infront of a subdomain, that's just bullshit. I mean www. shouldn't even be a requirement at all for a site.

And that's not all folks, Some site refuses me to get on because I don't use IE6, they gave themselves the trouble to make a check that checks your browser, just to deny me access to it because I don't use IE6. What if IE wouldn't have worked at all? I could not clear my assignments and get into trouble because the average skill of a Coder/Administrator there is even lower than a grilled assbeef of a rabies-infected donkey.

Now i'm off to start IE6, watch out how i type in the web address, and having to wait ages because the site uses atleast 10 js files to spawn a pop-up which doesn't even come through IE's popup blocker.

Eh? Is it really that much effort to put "www." in a URL? I can empathise with you having to use IE6 though . Seems silly how they can't at least install IE7, and why not FF3.0? Maybe your school's IT Administrator is silly.

I think he means that the Digital Learning Environment of his "school" doesn't support other browsers than IE6. Thus also at his home/student room.

Blackboard 7 in my case has stopped being compatible with Opera 9, since the logon method has changed a few months ago. Whether FF 3 is suitable for uploading my assignments is completely depending on what method (of the several possible ones) the instructors demand.

Searching in the databases of the library takes enough time to learn to play guitar, not even talking about the crappy way I can give my search requests.

I said it before and I will say it again. Anyone who has a "MCSA" diploma (Microsoft certified system administrator) is an idiot who can't think outside the box or code properly. Since the Dutch and European government and several big companies there (Magus lives in Dutchie land) are switching to open source, you should make a petition to ensure you don't graduate based on closedsource protocols. Current IT students are all likely to land outside the future work enviroment and are faced with studying at night to reeducate themselves to keep up with the upcoming market.

At Higer Education here (like Gazz said, Magus at I live in Dutchy land), it is normal to upload your assignments instead of bringing them physically (printed) to the instructor. Additionally, all subject-related messages of the instructors are put online. Grades are being published there too, and the same web-environment is warning me when I am having new messages on my university webmail account. Last but not least, the powerpoint files of the lectures are downloadable from there as well.

We still use text books and scientific articles, but are being supported heavily by groupware-like web applications.

well im with you, fuck www. , it's a dead standard. NOBODY uses www. shit look up at the url for this site... no www. ... now on to the BlackBoard comment.

F U C K Blackboard, its a terrible terrible half assed group of unrelated incoherent databases and web apps that were never intended to work in unison and for some ungodly reason, school systems still USE it... FFS you could do the same with a free and simple CMS, like drupal.(lol@drupal).

Furthermore, I feel your pain about IE6... wtf is with this craze of blocking out every other browser that, BTW is more secure in every manor. Lets forget the fact that every hacker targets Microsoft, and Microsoft based applications. IE6 is SLOW, and breaky.

(how ever you should check out https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419 ) all you do is right click on the tab after you have this add-on installed, and select "Switch Rendering Engine". The add-on then uses your IE libraries to render the page in it's slow, out of date Microsoft engine. (you can select the version of IE and which sites you want it to do it for in the Add-On options).

I hope I helped a little bit
