Ridiculously Loud PC!

Hi, some of you might remember my name, but i don't remember the name of my old acc! :rant:

I have a problem, and remembered the good old gamers hell forums.

The problem is, my pc IS SO LOUD.

My specs are:

IntelP4 3.4 Ghz
1GB of RAM
400GB Hard Drive
Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX

It's not a bad system, honest! :dennis:

When i start the system the pc is silent as a sleeping baby.

The probs starts when i play games.

However, it's weird!!

I can play a game for several hours and it is COMPLETELY SILENT.

Sometimes i start a game (say WoW) then all hell breaks loose. Its so loud it actually ruins the game. I hate it.

Please mates can you give me detailed tips to find the cause of the prob (what fan it is) and what i can do about it (including buying new ones) --please help with which ones to get if i need to.

Btw, the PC has done this since i got it, and i have switched G cards, so that aint the prob.

I am not a hardware guru like some of our members but, if it was me, when the noise started, I would open the side and start stopping the fans. If that does not work, try applying pressure to the power supply. I know when my puter starts, the psu is loud for a little bit, applying pressure outside the case remedies this. If that it not your problem, it could be your hdd, in which case it might be going out. Just my thoughts

The first thought that pops into my mind is that the fan of your Graphicscard is messed up. You did however say that you could play some games for hours without the sound becoming a problem. That seems to rule out the fan on your gp.

Open your case and leave it open. Once the sound starts to rise again try looking at wires touching one of your vertical fans (like the one on your cpu), the chances of one of the wires touching your horizontal fans is low since they are all blowing down, and wires tend to fall down just like anything else exposed to gravity. Wires touching fans tend to make huge noiselevels and could have been created when you swapt gfx cards and toucht the wires.

If this is not the case then your cpu heats up and you have a cool and queit system integrated in your mobo bios. Check your Bios book that came with the mobo or the manufacturers website.

If that is still not the case then post again and we will see from there.

Thanks for the reply mates, but i really don't understand the mobo bios part. Sounds like a good idea, except (please forgive me) i don't have a clue what my mobo is! :bucky!:

Right, it's your motherboard. The central board that lets all your components communicate with each other. Your motherboard bios (the operating system of your motherboard) can be accessed by presiing del directly at system bootup.

No matter what you do, getting a good new fan on top of your cpu always cools down your system more effectively than a standard fan that came with your cpu. Take this one for instance, it doesn't only cool your cpu but also cools your ram and gfx card a bit by blowing in their directions.

Good luck with finding and exploring your bios, just one tip. Read before changing anything in the bios

Some good tips here. What's probably happening is that your cpu fan is reading the temperature of the CPU through the motherboard, and adjusts it appropriately. WoW is a game that probably uses 100% of the cpu at all times, so the temperature goes up. I don't know what cooler you're using, but I recommend swapping to one with a big copper heatsink and a large but quiet fan. A big zalman cooler usually works great, so check out the link mentioned and check your local webshops if they have one for your system.

And that is what the cool and queit technique is all about. The fan blows harder when the temp rises.

Ok guys so i opened up my PC and here are two pics i took with my phone:





The DAMN FAN THAT IS SO LOUD is clearly marked in RED!! :rant:

I ran WoW and slowed the fan down with my finger for a few seconds and the noise dropped, so it must be it.

The fan reads: "AVC" in the centre.

Now, which fan is this? The CPU one or...? Im not sure.

Cpu.

The heat outlet at the end works as a megaphone, lol. Get a good one like I suggested or some watercooling which is even better.
