Vista Aero vs Ubuntu Beryl.

Talk about getting owned in the graphical, price and performance department. Windows takes a huge beating [ame=http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=xC5uEe5OzNQ]in this video.[/ame]

The one thing that kept spinning in the back of my mind was that Ubuntu only requires 1 GB of memory and a old GPU to get this performance. Talk about efficiency. Shame that Direct x is the most common used technology in games, just think about the resources that Windows uses now and gamers would have to spare in Linux.

Yeah I read that a few weeks ago. It is on of the reasons why I decided to remove Vista and revert back to XP and Ubuntu on dual-boot.

The last 2 releases of Ubuntu are magnficant and really stick the knife into Vista. It shows how bloated and horrible even basic versions of Vista are and how much you could squeeze out of your CPU and GPU if games were non-OS specific are used OpenGL as the sole GFX API.

XP -9/10
Vista - 2/10
Ubuntu 8/10

Hey Gazz, just for fun I turned full desktop effects on in Ubuntu, but didn't get the effects like that. They were more a sort of variation on Vista's effects.
So how can I turn Beryl on?

just do
apt-get install beryl beryl-manager emerald-themes

then type:
beryl-manager

Then add beryl-manager to the list of startup programs, by going to System -> Preferences -> Sessions, and under the tab Startup Programs and clicking New.

BTW you don't need Ubuntu to use it, the effects can be loaded into any distro with a decent X windows and OpenGL driver.

Thanks! Once I boot Ubuntu again, I will try it out. I already expected it a little, that I need an extra package file. Now I now which one, plus the necessary commands for the APT, I shouldn't have any trouble running it.

Well I still Luv the look and feel of Vista over XP, and I rarely use the Aero feature.
I do like playing games in DX10 mode at very high settings. Does Ubuntu support
SLI or Crossfire? Even if it does, how often are new drivers available. I know some
games have Linux support. What would you say is the percentage of new releases
that have that support? I can see the possibilities in Linux but it seems to just
continuously lag behind. Almost like the developers just don't want it to ever get really
mainstream. Just my thoughts, enlighten me :-)

The only field that Ms has as it's advantage is Directx. As an os Linux is way more efficient, more price effective and lately more companies have been releasing Linux based desktops and notebooks. The reason why MS still has this huge share is because of marketing and a well known brand name.

The days where Linux lagged behind are most definitely over. The developers really want it to become a huge success (although the old school Linux scene wants it to stay underground) and they are slowly succeeding at it. MS just has more then enough money to spend to advertise their product and push all of their competition away with any means necessary.

At this point Linux is meant to be a OS to dualboot if you are a gamer. Driver support for Linux has been just as much improved as Linux itself lately and both Nvidia and ATI have been showing some love for Linux.

But for elitest gamers or graphics whores, XP and Vista and DirectX still remain the primary choice. Unless OpenGL is taken up as an alternative graphics API then there is next to no chance of playing games like Crysis, UT3 on Linux.

CEDEGA and Wine are two decent Windows emulators, but they will never support the latest games and technology. For instance you have to pay for CEDEGA, but it only supports Shader Model 2.0 and some DirectX9 functionality and because it emulates Windows API calls, it will never be as quick as the windows alternative.

Use Linux for office work, safe internet browsing and a secure working environment. For games use Windows.

Huh, doesn't UT3 play on Linux? It's epic, they are Linux whores. Linux does play more games then a Mac
