    Default Interman's Final Fantasy extravaganza

Some of you may've read that my desktop sys died a while ago. This means I'm stuck playing console titles for a while. Growing up I was never a huge Final Fantasy fan, and only played a few of the games briefly. When I think about it XII is probably the only one I've finished. Because of this I've decided to start at the beginning, and see where I get before I'm sick of the games. I'll log my progress in this thread, along with impressions and so on. Oh yeah, and I'm playing the original titles, none of the remakes.

    Also, there'll probably be spoilers.

    Start: Feb 29, 2008.

    Status:
    Final Fantasy I - completed.
    Final Fantasy II - completed.
    Final Fantasy III - completed.
    Final Fantasy IV - completed.
    Final Fantasy V - completed.
    Final Fantasy VI - completed.
    Final Fantasy VII - completed.
Final Fantasy VIII - Progress [xxxxx.....]
    Final Fantasy IX -
    Final Fantasy X -
    Final Fantasy X-2 -
    Final Fantasy XII - completed.
    Final Fantasy XIII -

Oh god what have I gotten myself into. This is pretty boring already. Final Fantasy I starts with your gang of four dudes, in my case a fighter, a black belt, a white mage, and a red mage, which according to the faq I'm using is the standard newbie gang. I've met the king, who says the princess has been kidnapped and he wants her back.

Initial impressions: Decent RPG elements, I guess. Boring graphics. Boring dialogue. Boring story. I'm grinding random encounters just so I can survive the mysterious castle up north. Oh and I had to turn the audio off completely. Thank god for podcasts. Ironically I'm listening to the 1up Retronauts podcast.

    * Characters seem to be dying fairly easily. I'm not sure how to revive them, so I keep starting new games. Being knocked unconscious is a better mechanic. Never mind I figured it out. PS: a "madpony" just killed my chain mail wearing fighter. Stupid crits.

    * Saved the princess. Looks like I have access to the main continent, and that I need to make some orbs shine again. I'm a bit surprised at the sometimes kind of long fights, considering it's this early in the game.

    * Made it to the second town, which had been invaded by pirates. I killed them, and got their ship. It annoys me that if I queue up four attacks against one mob and it dies the remaining attacks get useless (it doesn't change to the next enemy). Earl, the black mage, got a pretty solid ice spell though, so I'm one-shotting stuff again.

    * Ok enough for today. My dudes are level 5 andI've farmed enough to get them some fancy weapons and spells. Tomorrow I go sailing.

Goal for today is finishing at least another 10%. This is calculated by how far I get in the FAQ, just so you know.

    * Made it past the ocean, and to a place called Elfland, where the prince has been asleep for five years. He needs some stuff to wake up, and in order to get it I have to farm monsters up to about level 9, if I'm going to have any chance of making it past the random encounters. The shops have a lot of expensive stuff that I apparently need, so I guess I'm stuck here for a while. Oh, and monsters seem to be poisoning me now - great.

    * Yeah I'm not going to reach the goal Getting to level 9 is taking a while.

    * Made it to level 9, but still chilling out at the same town. Wolves pretty much cower in fear now, until of course the tougher wolves eventually show up.

    * Went into a pretty tough cave where I had to run from most fights. That's really another one of the annoying issues with this game. It's really hard to know how much more is left of some place, so you're often just saving the good spells for things you have to fight. I expect it to improve later when I have more spells available.
    * Got the thing I needed, and delivered it to a guy who was supposed to help me. Tomorrow I go sailing again.

    * Lots of progress today. I've woken up the prince, gotten a key that let me open a bunch of locked treasure rooms, chatted with some dwarves, and gotten to a new continent.
    * Stumbled across a new village, which had been devastated by vampires. Off to the "earth cave" now. Apparently there's a place that's awesome with regards to exp and money, so I'll hopefully afford the expensive new level 5 spells in a few hours.
    * It's a bit more fun now. You don't really have to farm AS much to progress in the storyline.
    * Half-way done now. Yay.
