One positive aspect is that obese americans have to start riding bikes
But yeah, even here in Norway food prices are going up a bunch. Our gas prices have always been a lot higher than yours (still are), but our incomes are higher in general also...
Food, low dollar, etc. are issues of wich I can understand they are troublesome. The problem though is that in the US, most people vote for the republicans (who seem to be unable to solve those issues).
Fuel bills? Use more economical cars and the problem is solved. About a dollar per gallon is almost free, compared to what we are paying here in Europe. We are paying about 2 euros per liter (about a quarter of a gallon).

Erm, the republicans never cared about things like a "social safety net", for example. No protection against losing your job (when it's not your own fault, that is), good health care only available for those who can effort it, etc. Things that the Dutch have "reached" decades ago. So it's not "we were flourishing", a succesful society is creating opportunities for everyone and not for merely a part. Your country's economy would be much stronger when your government starts doing things in the West-European style. But people like Bush sr., Bush jr. and (probably) McCain will never understand that.
And lets not forget that the republicans are responsible for spending billions (with a b) to the war on terror, without any significant success. While for example the Dutch are comperatively succesful (with a tiny budget).
It is a matter of wrong policy.
The euro is inflating for years, actually already since its introduction. The "collapse" of the american economy (the mortgage crisis some months ago, low value of the dollar, etc.) is of much more recent date. Stop blaming us please, it is not the european's fault.

The biggest blame of inflation worldwide, although the us seems to be struck harder since it completely relies on it is oil. Europe isn't responsible for the demise of the states, and even if it was, it would have been because the states allowed it too.
The mortgage crisis is also self inflicted. Here in Europe (I live in the Netherlands too) we simply do not allow people with poor credit ratings to buy a house. The Americans however seem to be the only ones thinking its smart to lend money to those people for some reason, and they themselves are to blame for the market demise themselves. The effects off that will be felt for decades on the housing market. Thank Gazz we only had some mild effects off that on our markets.
The Republicans are by far the worst thing that could happen to the states, but its residents (off whom more and more are homeschooled all the time and extremely poorly educated) seem to love their stance on issues like religion, sex and their ineffective way off fighting terrorism. The tax cuts promised by them take away so much needed money from all state services like healthcare, schooling, retirement plans and so on, that they continue to cripple their nation more and more.

I'm just glad you guys are Dutch citizens. Your to young to have a grasp on the way the world actually works.
1st off, you can't lose your job just because. If your fired for no reason you can go to the Labor Department and file a greivence and get your job back with back pay. The Housing Market crash wasn't because people got loans they couldn't pay. It's because asshats in the financial institutions were playing games and over building in undesirable locations. I make my money as an Architect and while I have seen a few slow periods this year, I still have plently of work. And slow period are common anyways. Health Care, no we don't have the best Health Care. But we could if we would dump all the outdated welfare programs that a Great Majority of the so called Poor People abuse in this country. 75% of the people in the welfare system refuse to even look for jobs. That's why all the illegal immigrant come to the US. They know they can make good money doing jobs that people in the welfare system refuse to do. Why get a job, the welfare system pays almost as good and you don't need to do anything. And who developed this screwed up welfare system, the Democrats.
The war on Terror. We didn't start this war, we were attacked. And we attacked back. Iraq was harboring terrorist and Saddam was brutitizing his own citizens. The closest person I can think of to compare Saddam to is Adolf Hitler. No one in Europe complained when we decided to fight that war on terror. I'm surprised at the attitude that the European community has on the issue. If it wasn't for America you would all be German Citizens. But it's ok to free Europeans from tyranny, screw the rest of the world. And most of the people in Iraq are happy. It's the Terrorist that want us to leave. All you have to do is look at Afganistan. We freed them from Russian Tyranny and then a Democrat pulled us out before they were ready to govern themselves properly and the Taliban took over. Way to go Democrats.
Before you make opinions about the US you should actually study the situation on your own. It seems you only know what someone decided to tell you and they skipped the facts that didn't suit their purpose. Were as I've lived thru the past 46 years of it.
And let's see what happens after our Presidential Election, as soon as it's over the Euro will lose strength and gas will stabilize, regardless of the winner. The EU and the Democratic Party are behind this situation in an effort to weaken the Republician Party.
Jimmy Carter, the economy sucked. Ronald Reagon, the economy improved and the Berlin Wall came down. George Sush Sr., the economy was good and he drove Saddam out of Kuwait. Bill Clinton, the economy nose dived and Terrorist started taking over. Somolia is an example and 9/11 was a direct result of his inabilitly to react to the rising situation. And NAFTA was one of his policies that we still have to live with that takes jobs away from our own citizens. George Bush Jr., the economy has been good until the Democrat's took back control of the Congress. And if we look even farther back you'll find that the corrupt Welfare System was a result of Lyndon Johnson, another Democrat. If you go back to the Real last Great Democratic President you'll find Franklin D. Roosevelt and his policies were more like present day Rebublicans.
When the US is strong so is the Majority of the World. When we are weak the rest of the World follows. Do we want to be like the European's, HELL NO. Be careful about what you wish for. You may have to pray to Ala soon.
That's so far off-based I won't even reply. Go back to school.

Dont try to win the battle by being so degrading of our younger age. Both Richard and me are well educated persons who both went to university and have a fair understanding how the world (and a bit of respect towards others) work. You might learn something from that.
Dont we all love how Slaymate is one of many scared Americans who believe anything the republicans tell them. Oh no, its a scheme of the democrats and Europeans to take down America. Lolz.

Slay, I didn't say that "fighting back" is bad. I only said that the USA spent billions (with a B) on the war on terror without real succes. Your country wouldn't have come so far as it has come without our help. Our have you forgotten that the Dutch are still battling in Uruzgan (in Afganistan), making the area way safer for the locals than anyone expected (with that low budget of ours)?
And do not think that our age (I am 21 and Gazz 28) does make us inferior to you. As Gazz said, he and I both went/go to university (Tilburg in my case), so don't think we're stupid. A bit more respect would be nice.

Not to take down America, it's just a ploy to elect Obama.
I have a friend serving in Afganistan and his wife forwarded this email to me. I removed his name and rank.
Hello everyone, As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to 'The War Zone'. I wanted to share with you what happened. He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram. As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service. So really he was just here to make a showing for the American's back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you. I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States. I just don't understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-in-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country. If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.
