i have an 8x agp geforcefx5200 in a 4xagp slot and it runs fine..

Its the motherboard that matters, If u have AGP 8 on your mobo you can run any graphics card, it won't be able to use all 8 pipes that your motherboard supports, but you can still use it as it was meant to be used. So thats a yes
As for you Mr 8x in a 4x, your graphics card is running only at 4x
8X will work in a 4X mobo, just not as good, obviously.

AGP 8x cards work fine on AGP 4x slots, just with reduced overall bandwidth on the bus... This will reduce FPS in the very latest titles, but legacy apps should see any difference as they were written around the earlier spec.
