I enjoyed Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege. The only problem is they didnt really focus on character growth. If you want a game with character growth it is best to play an MMORPG. World of Warcraft and Everquest II have good character skills that evolve after lvling up. If you do not want to play monthly, I heard Guild Wars is a good game because it focuses on party combat and individual skills. If you do not even want to get off your chair or pay for a game, I would try downloading a beta for an MMORPG called Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst. This game is basically a recreation of a game that is like 4 years old, but it is really fun and will give you something to do. You can download it at this link: Phantasy Star Online: BB . Good luck to you and please reply if you have any questions!

If you don't mind old graphics, I can suggest you the Fallout series. Best to start with is probably Fallout 2.
The theme is Post-Nuclear, so you'll find some mutations in this world.
It's cheap now, you can probably pick it up for 5 bucks.

Edit: You should try out 'Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption' too. It's quite an action RPG but with a really nice story.
Came out 2000, so you get it for cheap now.

Part one is not so easy and has some bugs in the party-system which part 2 hasn't. You're also under timepressure which is not in the second installement.
But you can probably get both for about 10 bucks anyway.

Diablo II and the Lord Of Destruction Expansion pack is fun

The game is several years old so you can buy it cheap, the graphics might seem a little outdated but it's still a fun game ;)
