Looking for an alternative OS, but you don't want to pay extraterestial prices? Then the many GNU/Linux projects are the operating systems to put some attention to. If you are used to Windows, Ubuntu is a good start (clickylinky). And it is completely free!
![]() By the way, suggestions about other good GNU/Linux OSs for people used to Windows are welcome in this topic.

Yes Ubuntu is a nice distro indeed. It is tailored for noobs, so its really quite easy to install. Out of the box Ubuntu is a good all round solution, but it lacks customisation on install that other major distros rely on.
I use SUSE Linux x64, which is one of the top distros for people who used linux pre-ubuntu/knoppix/LiveCd era.

Ubuntu is great! GM2 makes a solid point, but fails to think about the fact that most computer users don't know anything about their OS. People who choose to use Ubuntu at least look around for other alternatives to Windows that was already installed on their store bought pc and deserve credit for that.
Ubuntu may be far from perfect, but if there is ever going to be an linux os that deserves more attention it´s got to be this one. With coupled sales of PC´s and pre installed operating systems on them being forbidden in the EU in the future, this one might be able to kick some MS butt which in term might make MS decide to put some more effort in making Windows a bit better. Considering the profit they make from it, they owe it to the customers to make Windows a lot better then it is now. Suse is great, have it on my PC and PS3 now, and also have a stack of live cd´s (like Ubuntu and Sabayon) and a small distro of something on a usb stick with my own browser and mail address so I can check my mail and favourites everywhere. Can´t seem to find that stick though

You can't boot your PS3 games in the Linux environment Richard and you probably never will. Linux would take up too many system resources to run games.

Oh, you changed your PS 3 in a sort of Dual Boot. Or weren't you serious when saying you put SUSE on it?

I've never tried any Linux OS's myself. But I know alot of these guy's have.
There are also quite a few Linux users over at our Hardware site (I'm in charge of that forum). You might want to chat with a few of the members there. http://hardware.gamershell.com/forum Bionic and krimson are both staff members and they run the in's and out of the site (the site itself is running a version of linux). You'll want to chat them up. And ThrillKill is the how-to guy that supplies guides on how to do almost anything. I can't say enough about ThrillKill :-)

Slaymate, just get a live cd distro of Linux and try it. It won't blow up your computer or rape your dog and you could finally have some knowledge on it how Linux functions and looks.

I am quite surprised that slay does not even use a LiveCD for testing during extreme overclocking or soaktesting. I unplug my HDDs and just use SUSELive or UbuntuLive to ensure system stability. They all come with memtextx86 too, so you can really test those granular changes.
