Actually Gimp is already included in Ubuntu. You know, that linux distro you can get as an live cd so you don't have to install anything to try it. Linux, that OS you still need to try! Hint, hint :P

Actually I was going to download the Live CD. Mostly so I could boot up
my system and have complete access to all the Windows files that
Microsoft doesn't want you messing with :-)
But I will check it out, probably in the next few days. I just bought the
Crysis pre-order (you can play it today), and I'm downloading it now.
I'm sure it will occupy my time for a couple of days :-)

1) I should make the screenshots smaller if I were you, cause now it is easy to lose oversight
2) It looks like changing desktops goes a little different than in my case. I guess you are able to run "desktop effects", unlike my Ubuntu setup. But I guess that it is caused by a better - working driver in your case. For my GeForce 6200SE Turbocache, it appears that there are no better drivers available . But an advantage is that switching to another desktop is going instantly (instead of waiting for an animation to be completed).
3) OpenOffice.org is also available in Dutch: OOo NL

BTW, Openoffice.org rules! I use it on my Win '98 machine (though it has insufficient RAM for it), my dual-boot desktop, and on my laptop (don't want to activate a 90-day trial of that lousy Office 2007). And it is true that Ubuntu even runs on a Pentium 3, 128 Mb Ram system (a HDD of 5 Gb is more than enough)

EDIT: Even better then Firefox (in most cases) is Opera 9 (Clickylinky!). It is faster, easier to configure and comes without all that nasty toolbars IE and Firefox often are equipped with (of wich some cannot be removed, even if you don't use them and are merely in your way).

PDF files:
Foxit Reader

Replaces: Adobe Reader (formerly known as Acrobat Reader)

Advanatages:
- faster
- some extra tools that are not in Adobe Reader, but only in it's bigger brother (Adobe Acrobat). However, some of them only work in the paid version of Foxit Reader. But all that makes Foxit Reader replace Adobe Reader, is 100% free. (sorry for the bad construction of this sentence)

Disadvantage:
- When printing multiple pages per sheet, the order of those pages might not be completely correct. At least, I experienced that when I exported a .ppt file containing lecture material into a PDF (with OpenOffice.org Impress), and printed that with Foxit Reader. The order was correct in the PDF file, by the way.

Yet, in most cases it works perfectly!

Ok, inserted that one into the list. Slightly edited it to look more in par with the rest of the article and took away the disadvantage since it may be user related. I really need to insert Gimp, clean up this topic and reconstruct the other one too.
